Is Alienware still the place to go for the biggest, baddest possible motherfucker of a computer?

(it's about that time)

pretty much, but you could build your own for same power but cheaper.

In my admittedly spotty research the thing to do seems to buy a stripped down Alienware then go shopping around for all the components of the badass top of the line model. You get the powerhouse and save a grand or so.

For music? I have to say that now that I have my Mac, I can't go back. Just so we're clear--I don't have any kind of brand allegiance--this is based entirely on about 6 years of Mac-Alien-Mac trial and error in the studio. I really enjoyed my Alien, it never ever crashed on stage, but the smoothness of the Mac ride puts it to shame. If I could rewind and tell my old self to buy a Mac and not the Alien when I had the money, I would totally go all Mac.

I love that I can unplug/plug in interfaces and it doesn't freak out, so I can pick up my MacBook and go, and still be working on something without interruption. Portability is a big thing for me, so maybe that's not so much a thing for you? The Mac instantly recognizes stuff, installations have been a breeze, and there is a general stability there that the Alien just didn't have. Plug'n'play, baby!

Sorry this is not a more technical review--I don't have that kind of background, but as a creative artist, being able to open it up and go is super-important to me, and the Alien never quite got there like that. Maybe they are different now? My Alien is about 5 years old, so I'm sure they have made lots of improvements. Although, Vista really scares me, but that's a whole other conversation, I think!

Do you run Windows on your mac?

No, but if you have questions about that, talk to Jason--he was dual-booting his Mac last I checked. You gots PC-only plug-ins? That's one of the hardest parts of this divide--deciding which plug-ins/programs you are willing to let go of!

Well, I got xp running on my mac laptop with no problems, so I don't have to let go of anything in that respect. I was just wondering if you were all about both the Mac OS and hardware, or if it was like you were all about the mac 'cause it ran windows better than pc hardware.

since the advent of really badass firewire and USB interfaces, i'm truly not convinced that brand matters as much as it used to provided you get a decently spec'ed machine, a gaggle of ram, and at least 2 HDs.

if you do go PC, it would be wise to make sure that whatever you do end up is running XP. but you probably knew that.

The Penny Arcade guys like these for PCs...

Alienware is owned by Dell now. VoodooPC is owned by HP now. Meh.

I say build a tricked out custom PC (with XP Pro...not Vista, Windows 7, or Media Center for now) or buy a Mac.

For desktops, I'd totally say build your own. Newegg.com is my friend.

If you'd rather get a pre-built, I've heard good things about Widow PC, as [info]audiate mentioned above. Also, Falcon Northwest makes some of the best systems out there. I usually check them out to see what the "top of the line" is at the time, and base my builds off that.

Alienware is owned by Dell now, if that matters to you. But they still make badass equipment, so yeah.

Above comments are valid as well.

Since my advice above was for desktops...

If you want to get a non-Mac laptop, it seems like the ThinkPad series from Lenovo (previously from IBM) is still one of the better options on the PC side.

Of course, you can always install Windows on an Intel Mac, but that's beside the point.
