Mine's been the source of a lot of "stab out eyes" level agony, which I guess is pretty effin' gothic, but just like Illinois' best glam rock, "Enuff Z'Nuff".

If you got a sec, could you take a look at the rinky dink dank survey I put as a reply to my initial post?

Infekted.org has been a huge help, thanks. I had read a bunch of shit on there I found over the years from Google searching, but actually sitting down and combing through the boards was definitely beneficial.

I'm still having some issues, though. When you get a chance, could you take a look at the survey I put as a reply to this initial post?

I have the 'keyboard' Virus TI...

...Haven't you heard all the awesome stuff I've released using it?!?! Oh, wait...

damnit.

Someone move to Atlanta and start a band with me. *insert pout here*

Man, you know you ain't need more than one dude to start an industrial project.

If you've been using your Virus though, maybe you could help me out, as I've been having much problems. I put up slipshod survey as a reply to this initial post, if you were so inclined.

heh Traditionally, yeah, one guy makes an electro-band...

*BUT*!!!

The only times I've ever successfully written was when I had someone else ... hell, at least half of those times they weren't even writing with me, they were just hanging out. hahaha So in actuality, what I need, is just to start inviting friends to come hang out a few times a week...

Hmm...?

yeah, more of the same. basically, it sounds like complete bullshit with the usb/virus control interface and i'm trying to figure out how to fix that.

1. Which Virus TI set up do you use? (i.e. as a plugin to another sound card via USB and Virus Control, as the sound card itself, not as the sound card and just midi and multi or seq mode with the analog outs, etc.)

2. How's that sound compared to like stand alone VSTs?

3. What's your computer set up like? ("Mac or PC" and all that)

4. Do you have a lot of issues with popping and clicking?

USB into my Mac Pro. I don't use it as an audio interface, don't get problems with pops.

If you are getting pops I would suspect your USB bus. Give the virus it's own bus. I.e. Buy a PCI USB2 card and dedicate it to the virus.

...you, er... Don't have anything like a USB hard drive connected to the same USB bus as the virus do you..?

Nah, nuthin' like a usb hard drive, but i'll try the pci usb2 card thing.
thanks a bunch for you help, though.

(do you use logic? i'm thinking about ditching cubase)

I have a license for Logic Studio 8 however to quote Mr LaPlegua, 'Logic isn't very logical.'. I find Cubase much better. It's the little things - such as notes ACTUALLY SNAPPING TO BAR LINES when you quantize for example.

1) I use Virus Control for patch editing and usually have it open as a plug-in. I should mention though that I only use the analog outs, I feel the USB audio outs sound different (ie not as good), despite Access being pretty adamant that they sound the same.

2) Better than any VST I've ever heard.

3) PC, Cubase 5 Studio. I am planning to hop over to the Mac side of things when I can afford to though.

4) Popping and clicking: I haven't had any real probs with that (only solemnly with what I believe is D.), but if you're encountering this personally, could be a couple different things:

A. Your audio interface's buffer size is set too low. If this is the case, all of your audio should be making the popping and clicking upon playback.

B. If you're using the analog outs, you may be clipping the line inputs to your audio interface.

C. The patch on your Virus is maxing out the available DSP power. (Shouldn't make stuff clip, but there have been reports made about it on infekted.org.)

D. The patch on your Virus is cranked up so loud internally (through osc volume, filter saturation, lots of effects, etc) that it is clipping before it even gets out of the box.

1) Okay, cool. Yeah, I love that patch editing interface, so much easier than drilling down through a little LCD menu. When it comes time to use the analog outs, though, you just switch over into "direct mode", right? If so, do you enounter this problem?: http://faq.access-music.de/index.php?action=article&cat_id=001006&id=53&lang=

2) Yeah, hmm. That's a big clue that I'm fukkin' something up 'cause I'll play the thing and it's all "deet deet deet" and I drop in whatever random VST (vanguard or whatever) and it's all BWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW.

Also, shit generally sounds a lot better if I'm using the Virus as the audio interface, but then when I render out the track, the rendered track sounds the same as if the Virus was a USB plugin. I suspect this is a digitally rendering vs. analog outs thing.

I also might just have the brain fever. This is a viable possibility.

1) I switch the drop-down box that defaults to say "USB 1+2" to "Analog Outs 1+2" and make sure to click on ''LIVE" in the lower left corner.

2) Crazy that you're experiencing issues like that. I personally haven't tried using the Virus as my audio interface, but it'd be a good idea to ditch that and use an external firewire interface for audio duties.

As far as hearing a significant difference in the quality of the Virus' audio versus other VSTs, I can only imagine that's a product of a bigger issue, as the Virus has some Serious EngineeringTM under the hood.

Have you taken a good side by side comparison of similar patches on Virus and say Vanguard, and looked at what effects are on? Nothing is quite as BWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW as a Virus patch with a good heap of unison, delay, verb, and maybe a low eq boost :)

Went over it some more this weekend.
The main issue might just be volume.
Like, the Virus is way quiet in comparison to Vanguard.

Same by you?

nope it's pretty loud for me.

make sure your volume slider on the far left is all the way maxed out. are you using the TI as your primary audio interface, or are you using a difference interface and running the analog outs of the virus into it?

(Reply to this) (Parent)

It's not Access' Fault, it's USB.

The Virus' main hardware audio outputs are 24bit @ 192khz. Due to severe limitations in USB bandwidth, the USB audio is down sampled to 16bit @ 48khz. Or in other words...The Main Out puts have 1.5 times more dynamic range and 4 times the audio sampling resolution of the USB outputs.

This is the dirty little secret of USB...it may be faster then Firewire, but it's bandwidth is greatly reduced. I can't wait for the day that the Virus has Firewire instead of USB.

RE #3: I jumped over from the PC side to Cubase on the Mac some years back. I haven't run my TI in Cubase in OS X, but it works fine in Logic. Let me know if you or Maggie have questions. I can send a project template I made.

E. If you are using the Virus as your audio interface, there is of the course the possibility of internal clipping if your DAW mixer is clipping a bunch.

F. Might be hitting your computer's CPU too hard with VST plugs? That'll make playback pop and clip too.

1. I have a Virus TI Keyboard. I use Virus Control in Logic 8...so a plug-in via USB. I don't use the TI as a soundcard (I use my MOTU for that).

2. Better than any VSTs or AUs that I've used.

3. G5 PowerMac running Leopard (OS 10.5).

4. Not unless I run like 12+ unique parts at the very same time.
