Would you be better off migrating away from the PC-only music software?

Maybe?
The people I know what have done the switch all describe it like escaping the twisted maw of a forgotten hellscape for the shores of an unbridled utopia, but I ain't too sure.

windows 7 is out and available for download for the next month i think, free use for a year, then you can buy it. if you bought vista already, you will be able to get windows 7 free as an apology from microsoft. i have been running windows 7 since january, and i like it very much, never touched vista aside from my mothers machine, and before that i was an xp user. but i will stand by w7.

yeah, it did, pretty much. since it is microsoft, there is always the security issues, but the win7 is able to run on a 800mhz comp with 500m ram. barely, but still. vista wouldn't even instal on that thing. i like it lots tho, it runs my tv and intertainment through the xbox as well, and is cheaper than a tivo.

here is the link.

If you must stay PC, I say rock the XP.

If you want the best possible tool for the job, go mac.

Cubase using FL Studio as a plugin, mostly for beatzz (FL being one of the mac dealbreakers, along with Vanguard (which I'm revisiting in a "stay away from the presets" sort of way)).

But you like-a the mac, eh?

Spend the money on good hardware, install Ubuntu Linux, and run all the windows apps he needs under Wine, Cedega, Crossover Office, or Crossover Games.

Gives you access to a LOT more interesting software, and will Run windows crap in a way that is far more stable (for the things that do run, which is a substantial list).

i had Ubuntu and it was annoying trying to get my ipod to work.

then i upgraded to some other linux and it ate my entire library.

i was sooo not happy.

i was also not happy that i had to buy a new photo printer because linux + canon = ZERO drivers.

i had nothing but nightmares with linux...secure, but gah. never again.

Hm, yeah, hadn't even thought of that.

Since music shit can get pretty greedy on the resource tip, I'm not sure that's something I'd want to put on an emulator (which is what like wine is, right?), but it's definitely worth researching.

I am still trying to get Ubuntu recognize the newish high end video card I have in my good PC. It fails (so does Fendora 10, so this is not a Ubuntu-specific problem), best I can do is drop to the command line (thankfully, I've used unix since 1988 so I am comfortable there). I've been shows an ubuntu website for how to recompile my kernel and add in new drivers for my video card. I will attempt that tomorrow night when I have the time, but it really shouldn't need that level of changes just to get a new video driver installed. I am begining to see why casual users hate linux and stick with Windows instead.

i've never met a musician who was happy with having gone linux.
i, and quite a few others i know, have all worked with ubuntu studio suplimented with wine, etc.
it's just not worth it. if his primary goal is to make music he should stick to windows or mac os.
linux is great for a lot of things. but it sure isn't for music.

win2k is seriously the most stable and trouble free windows OS i have ever used. it's like the one time they got it right - just what you needed to work, no (ok well not much) bloated bullshit in your GUI to slow things down.

as i recall, the 64-bit version of XP doesn't have the 4gb cap that it's more common 32-bit counterpart has. i could be wrong on this as my PCs don't have more then 4gb o' ram in them but i do seem to remember this being the case. worth looking into.

Despite the pro-linux talk above, if you're looking for something specifically for music-makin', steer clear. Even under wine, software like cubase, fruityloops, or anything else along those lines will not perform nearly as nicely, and have fun getting any external audio or midi devices to work properly. It can be made to work but my experience is that it's a considerably larger hassle then it's worth.

Personally I've gone mac for everything music and use linux for everything else, and if you've got the resources for it that's the ultimate approach i'd recommend. It'd require some software changes, as you mentioned RE fruityloops and vanguard, but there's plenty of options out there that do the job just as well, if not better.
